My Body and Movement brief
Project Title: The wandering of the Unconscious Mind.
(Taken from Wikipedia) Unconscious phenomena have been held to include repressed feelings, automatic skills, unacknowledged perceptions, thoughts, habits and automatic reactions, complexes, hidden phobias and desires. Within psychoanalysis the cognitive processes of the unconscious are considered to manifest in dreams in a symbolical form. Thus the unconscious mind can be seen as the source of dreams and automatic thoughts (those that appear without any apparent cause), the repository of forgotten memories (that may still be accessible to consciousness at some later time), and the focus of implicit knowledge (i.e. all of the things that we have learned so well that we do them without thinking)
I will create a short film of an ordinary day for the character, Which will involve getting ready and travelling to meet her friends. All the while following behind her without her realizing will be a faded clone; her Unconscious Mind. The Unconscious takes control of “the body” a few times for automatic reactions and skill, but for the most part goes unnoticed by the body or held back by other faded clone; The Conscious.
The film will end with them going to sleep, which when the Conscious falls asleep so does the body and gives the Unconscious a chance to show the body what she wanted to say in her dreams, as it’s the only time it could. This will link to that view that the Unconscious Mind manifests in our dreams in a symbolical form. With my idea being that it’s because they can’t do anything while the Conscious is awake.
The overall theme for this piece in relation to “Body and Movement” is the idea that we are not in control of ourselves, that these humanized representations of parts of our minds are what control us. That the Conscious and Unconscious are the unseen workers and the bodies present the result of their work.
My idea is to have this film without any dialog, perhaps using just music, or have it be silent. So i’ll therefore have to find ways to clearly express the thoughts and actions of the characters through their behavior and expressions.
Aims and Objectives:
Perhaps my utmost aim for this is to make it entertaining but at the same time make my general idea of being controlled known, through the relationship of the unconscious towards the Conscious, and both towards “the body” and the body towards the world.
“Consciousness is a term that refers to the relationship between the mind and the world with which it interacts.”
A documentary on the Unconscious (I can’t remember the title, i’m afraid…)
